With a Jewish daddy, two little Jewish boys, and a mommy that isn’t Jewish (and … not entirely certain where that left her), initially our family didn’t know exactly what our Temple would look like. Now we do, because we are far from the only blended family within our congregation.
TBO values diversity; our clergy and leadership recognize and then embrace who we are, welcoming us as we are. As a modern reform congregation, there is no “customary and usual” modern reform family. We fit right in!

My husband and I began our lifelong membership at TBO on Hillsborough Street when we moved to Raleigh in 1968. We raised our three children at TBO, and they all attended TBO’s Religious School. We celebrated three b’nai mitzvah and two marriages. Our four grandchildren are now TBO Religious School students … two of them will become b’nai mitzvah this year. Throughout these important lifecycle events that include my husband’s passing in 2001, the TBO family has supported and sustained me. These many years later my own Jewish identity was reaffirmed when in 2010 I became an adult bat mitzvah during a TBO trip to Eretz Yisrael…the Land of Israel.
That’s Why TBO Is My Temple (and my grandchildren’s, too)!
Temple Beth Or: My home away from home. I cannot fully express the role that TBO has played in my life, not just as a synagogue, but also as a place to grow, to learn, and to connect with people who will undoubtedly be lifelong friends. Nowhere have I been that is as loving and accepting as is the TBO community; a community that has given me the tools and encouragement to explore myself and define my Judaism. My time at the Temple has instilled within me the value and a passion for tikkun olam, something that I will pursue for my entire life.
