Honoring the Victims – Bearing Witness to Their Names

Six million Jews, one and a half million of them children, were slaughtered by the Nazis.  In solidarity with congregations worldwide, please join us and your friends and neighbors to remember those who were persecuted and killed because of their Jewish faith.  Reduced to numbers, not names, we must never forget.

Temple Beth Or’s program of remembrance is part of the worldwide commemoration:  Unto Every Person There Is A Name.  This year we will be commemorating the victims in conjunction with the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust.  We begin in the Temple Beth Or sanctuary at 7 a.m and will continue until 3:00 p.m as we read the victims’ names aloud in ten minute increments.  At 3:00 we will convene in Satisky Hall for the State of North Carolina’s Holocaust Observance, which will include presentations, readings and music commemorating the Holocaust.  At 4:30 p.m., we will reconvene in the sanctuary where will read the names of additional victims.  By remembering them individually, we will bear witness to their suffering and deaths.

We invite you to read their names aloud (in person) either before or after the State of North Carolina’s Holocaust Observance and to bear witness to others reading names for as long as it moves you during the day, in person in the pews or by watching our livestream.

A brief memorial service at the conclusion of the day will be highlighted by guest speaker Sheldon Bleiweiss, a member of both TBO and the Holocaust Commemoration Committee, who will speak on the all-too-timely subject of Anti-Semitism in Germany before World War II.  This presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a brief 7:00 p.m. memorial service.
