December 14 - “School Resource Officers- What You Need to Know?” - 6:30 PM – 8:30pm at Temple Beth Or
If you have a child who is attending, or will be attending, a public High School or Middle School, this presentation is for you. On December 14, the TBO Tikkun Olam Committee will host a panel covering different views about someone in your child's school you may have never heard of: the School Resource Officer (SRO). All parents want safety for their children. Nobody wants what happened in Uvalde Texas to happen anywhere else. SROs are assigned to your child's school for the purpose of protecting everyone in the school. SROs have become more prevalent as threats, and actual violence in schools, have increased. SROs have been a source of both comfort and concern. Some welcome them as added security. Some object to them, feeling that they have a negative impact, or an uneven impact on certain populations, and some feel funds would be better spent on counseling and mental health programs. SROs may even be seen as starting police records early on students, especially in disadvantaged communities.
This panel will explore how SROs are working to make our schools secure and safe and alternatives. We've invited four people involved with SROs in public schools to present and discuss their views before you: the leader of the RPD's SRO Unit, a church leader, a community leader and advocate for change, and a past Wake County School Board member. Please bring your questions.
Join us on Thursday, December 14, 6:30 PM – 8:30pm in Temple Beth Or’s sanctuary. Refreshments: 6:30 – 7:00 PM. Zoom begins at 7pm.
